History
The Roman civilization
First of all, in the heart of the Old Town there are traces of the Roman occupation. That is why we can see three capitals on the walls of the Castle. Besides, some recent works in Escuelas Street have revealed the remains of a Roman monumental construction, previous to the Castle. There are also ceramic remains of the sigillata type, in the Plaza de los Naranjos. A tomb at Victory Square. And also in the city of Marbella there are abundant signs of Roman occupation. That is why there are remains of burials in Las Chapas (Carril del Relojero). Besides slag, coming from mining activities, in the areas of Cerro Torrón and Cerro del Trapiche. And the spoils of a Roman bridge in “Puente Romano”. Ceramic fragments in the area of the cemetery of San Pedro Alcántara. And in Puerto Banús also next to the Torre del Duque.
But the most important archaeological sites in Marbella: “Villa Romana de Río Verde” and “Termas Romanas de Guadalmina” are from this period.
Muslim Period
The urban configuration of Marbella during the first two hundred years of occupation is still not clear. That is why it was in the 10th century when the Castle was built. Also in later times a large fence was erected to protect the population that settled next to it.
The city surrendered to King Fernando the Catholic on June 11, 1485. The act of handing over the keys took place in the place called “Cruz del Humilladero” (Cross of the Humiliation) in Málaga Street.
The Christian Marbella
First of all, we must highlight the figure of Alonso de Bazán, who belongs to the Bazanes family. Of which the Marquis of Santa Cruz, Alvaro de Bazan, was the head. But in any case it would be because of a distant family relationship. Nevertheless, Don Alonso took over the castle’s governorship and a position as alderman in the Chapter. With these powers he amassed a great real estate and economic empire which, upon his death and disappearance, would soon be over. From which his descendants served to constitute, by testamentary mandate, the “Hospital de la Encarnación”, or with its more popular name “Hospital Bazán”.
Another character was Lorenzo Domínguez de Rioja, who would give rise to the powerful Domínguez. They were in the public life of Marbella until the 19th century. His main legacy is the Cortijo Miraflores. One of the most important descendants of this family was José López Domínguez, Captain General of the Armies and President of the Government.
The 19th Century
The main economic activity in Marbella, from its origins, was agriculture, commerce and fishing. It should also be mentioned that Marbella had five sugar mills. When Marbella was in the front line against the Muslim enemy that occupied North Africa, the fishing activity was almost totally paralyzed, it was not very safe to venture out to sea.
In the 19th century, a series of laws were passed that favoured mineral exploitation. In addition, the existence in Sierra Blanca of an important magnetic iron deposit, together with favourable economic circumstances, brought the whole of Málaga to second place nationally in terms of industrialisation. All this led to the creation of two establishments for the treatment of this mineral on the banks of the River Verde.
The first blast furnaces for civil use in Spain were built: “La Concepción” or “Fábrica de Arriba”, and “El Ángel” or “Fábrica de Abajo”. The mining activity became the main one in Marbella. But other adverse circumstances also came along and, together with spurious interests, put an end to this industry.
New laws that were enacted to favour agriculture in our country facilitated the creation of various agricultural colonies. Among these, the San Pedro Alcántara and El Ángel colonies stand out.
San Pedro Alcántara was the origin of such an important population center and El Ángel was the germ of the flagship of tourism:
- Nueva Andalucia
- Puerto Banus
The 20th Century
As an agricultural town, Marbella languished, welcoming those who were originally known as holidaymakers, rather than tourists, which is a relatively modern term.
Until the 50’s when, led by Ricardo Soriano and followed by the Hohenlohe, Goizueta, Banús… the current Marbella emerged:
a symbol and sign of quality tourism, which definitively changed the physiognomy of Marbella, San Pedro Alcántara and the entire municipality. From now on the economic activity and the way of life of its inhabitants will be tourism.
This fact from the second half of the 20th century and the progressive tourist development, which starts in the sixties. Finally it transforms Marbella into one of the most outstanding of the world tourist panorama.
Marbella climate: what will the weather be like?
It is a well-known fact that Marbella is a sunny and warm city. Obviously, it is not so all year round, but we can safely say that it boasts good weather for the greater part of the year. The climate of Spain in general is quite irregular, and even more so in Marbella. That means there will be many months when temperatures or rainfall will be far from average. However, the weather usually follows the same pattern one year after another.
- Winter has mild temperatures and normally during the day we can wear light clothes. It is the most favourable season for rain, and half the time we may have rainfall.
- Spring and autumn are even more irregular seasons, during which very sunny and warm days intertwine with cold and humid days. It is difficult to know well in advance what the weather is going to be like. Usually, pleasant temperatures and enough rainy days, but not as many as in winter.
- In summer, however, most days are sunny, with rather high temperatures and clear skies. You won’t have to worry about the weather during your journey, because your driver will know in advance the forecast for your day of arrival. After you’ve booked your transfer with Malaga Cabbie, leave it to us to prepare your trip to avoid any sort of unpleasant surprises on your way from Malaga airport to Marbella.
Beaches and views
Views are one of the most attractive things on the route from Malaga airport to Marbella. Forget everything about the usual boring road from other places. All around here is full of a stunning variety of landscapes, from the mountains of Mijas to the beaches that we can see when we pass by Fuengirola. We can also see hotels, restaurants, tropical vegetation and many lights on both sides of the road that will try to get your attention. Due to the road running parallel and close to the beach, you will be able to see a large number of pedestrians crossing through the many bridges it has.
Recommendations
Marbella is one of the most exciting Costa del Sol destinations, and perhaps even in Spain, but you have to be careful in certain situations.
Beware of online bookings through airbnb. Using Malaga Cabbie’s transfer services will provide you an excellent experience and it’s the best way to start your holidays. But in several occasions we found out that after arriving to Marbella, our customers had been scammed with their accommodation. Book with reliable hosts only.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide taxi services within Marbella’s local area, only a transfer service from or to Malaga airport. If you want to take a taxi, avoid all kinds of unlicensed service, not only for your own safety, but also to support the professionals who provide their service legally.
Enjoy your holidays to the max, making the most of your stay in Marbella. Don’t forget to be careful with the beer and sun combination, which is so characteristic of this place, as it can turn out to be quite a dangerous affaire.
Have a nice stay and thank you for depositing your trust in blueplatecabs. You’ve chosen wisely by booking your transfer with us!

Background
Marbella has centuries of history, of cultures that have left their mark on the entire municipality and very especially in the historic centre. Roman, Arab and Christian remains are visible in the old town and are magnificently preserved.
The name: The origin of the word Marbella is subject to interpretation by historians and specialized philologists.
The Catholic Monarchs granted Marbella its coat of arms, by means of a Royal Decree, given in Barcelona in 1493.
There are prehistoric remains in Marbella, both from the Paleolithic period in the place called Coto de Correa in Las Chapas, and from the Neolithic period in the Pecho Redondo cave, Coto Correa de Las Chapas and the Puerto Rico caves in the southern foothills of Sierra Blanca.
A little geography
The municipality of Marbella occupies a strip that extends along 27 kilometres of coast. Behind it are the slopes of the Cordón Montañoso Litoral Penibético, formed by the Bermeja, Palmitera, Real, Blanca and Alpujata mountain ranges.
In addition, due to the proximity of the mountains to the coast, the city has a great unevenness between the north and south parts. This causes views of the sea and the mountains from almost all points of the city. The coastline is densely urbanized. Most of the undeveloped land is used for golf courses or small residential areas.
In addition, Marbella is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Istan and Ojen, to the northwest by Benahavis, to the west by Estepona and to the east by Mijas.
The municipality of Marbella is administratively divided into five districts, which are, from west to east:
- San Pedro Alcantara
- New Andalusia
- Marbella West
- East Marbella
- Las Chapas
The rest of the population is in a multitude of urbanizations in the districts of Nueva Andalucía and Las Chapas. These are along the coast and on the slopes of the mountains.
Demonym
Traditionally, the inhabitants of Marbella have been called “marbelleros” in the popular language, and “marbellenses” in the cult. Besides that it was in dictionaries and encyclopedias. However, since the mid fifties, those from Marbella have been called “marbellís” or “marbellíes”. This is the only name that appears in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy.
The use of “marbellí”, as a gentilicio, is due to an initiative of the writer and journalist Víctor de la Serna (1896 – 1958). He documented himself for a series of articles on “La marina de Andalucía”. He found in the History of Málaga and its province, by Francisco Guillén Robles, this word that Robles used to designate the inhabitants of the Muslim Marbella.
This word is the most used always to talk about the inhabitants of Marbella. We hear it both in the media and from people outside the city. However, the natives of Marbella use the word “marbelleros” to refer to themselves.
Because some people find the word “marbellí” annoying. That is why they maintain the position that when they speak of “marbelleros” they are referring to the people who were born there and that when they speak of “marbellíes” they are referring to the inhabitants of Marbella in general.
